So Solomon understood David; for, after he had commanded Joab to be slain, in obedience to his father, he sent for Shimei, and knowing he ought to be well watched, he confined him to Jerusalem for the rest of his life, and so it appears David should be understood; for the negative particle lo, in the former clause, "hold him not guiltless," should be repeated in the latter clause, though not expressed; instances of which frequently occur in the Hebrew Scriptures. - See note on Judges 5:30. 1 Samuel 2:3. Solomon evidently considered the request of Adonijah in this light; and was convinced that he was still aiming to seize the crown, to which he considered this as one step. But it is very doubtful, how far the plea either of policy or state necessity can justify Solomon in thus embruing his hands in his brother's blood, whatever might have been his treasonable intentions or conduct.spokenPsalm 64:8, 140:9; Proverbs 18:6, 18:7; Ecclesiastes 10:12; Luke 19:22ReciprocalNumbers 16:38 - sinners; 2 Samuel 12:10 - the sword; Proverbs 12:13 - wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips; 18:19 - brother; 20:2 - sinneth; Habakkuk 2:10 - sinnedVerse 24as the Lord1 Kings 1:29set me3:6, 3:7, 10:9; 1 Chronicles 29:23; 2 Chronicles 1:8, 1:9made meExodus 1:21; 1 Samuel 25:28; 2 Samuel 7:11-13, 7:27; 1 Chronicles 17:10, 17:17, 17:23; Psalm 127:1as he promised1 Chronicles 22:10put1 Kings 1:52; Ecclesiastes 8:11-13Reciprocal2 Samuel 23:5 - Although; 1 Kings 2:45 - the throne; 18:10 - the Lord; 1 Chronicles 3:2 - Adonijah; 29:24 - all the sons; Proverbs 17:11 - General; Habakkuk 3:1 - for whatVerse 25he fell1 Kings 2:31, 2:34, 2:46; Judges 8:20, 8:21; 1 Samuel 15:33; 2 Samuel 1:15, 4:12ReciprocalJudges 15:12 - fall; 2 Samuel 19:11 - sent; 23:5 - Although; 1 Kings 2:29 - Go; 1 Chronicles 3:2 - Adonijah; 29:24 - all the sons; Proverbs 17:11 - General; Ecclesiastes 8:4 - the word; Habakkuk 3:1 - for whatVerse 26Abiathar1 Kings 2:35, 1:7, 1:25AnathothJoshua 21:18; Isaiah 10:30; Jeremiah 1:1worthy of deathHeb. a man of death, 1 Samuel 26:16; 2 Samuel 12:5 *marg.barest1 Samuel 22:20-23, 23:6-9; 2 Samuel 15:24, 15:29; 1 Chronicles 15:11, 15:12hast been2 Samuel 15:24-29; Matthew 10:42; Luke 22:28; Galatians 3:4Reciprocal1 Samuel 2:31 - I will cut; 2:33 - to consume; 22:23 - he that seeketh; 30:7 - Abiathar; 2 Samuel 19:11 - sent; 1 Kings 4:4 - Zadok; 1 Chronicles 6:60 - Anathoth; Jeremiah 32:8 - Anathoth; Mark 2:26 - Abiathar; Romans 6:21 - for theVerse 27So SolomonThis was for having taken part with Adonijah; but by it a remarkable prophecy was fulfilled. These terms Shimei readily agreed to, and solemnly swore to observe them; and for three years he lived unmolested and in affluence. But growing secure, in contempt of Solomon's authority and of the oath of God, upon an unnecessary business he took a journey, which according to his own engagement forfeited his life. Thus the Lord left him to be infatuated, that due punishment might be inflicted upon him; in order that every ringleader of opposition to Solomon's kingdom might be crushed, and others be intimidated by their examples. See note on 2:1, and see note on Judges 11:1. Had these women been harlots, it is not likely that they would have dared to appear before Solomon; nor is it likely that such persons would have been permitted in the reign of David. Their husbands might at this time have been following their necessary occupations in distant parts.stoodExodus 18:13, 18:16; Numbers 27:2ReciprocalExodus 18:26 - the hard causes; Deuteronomy 17:8 - arise; 2 Samuel 15:2 - came; 2 Chronicles 32:4 - find; Job 9:33 - that might; 29:16 - the causeVerse 17O my lordGenesis 43:20; Romans 13:7Reciprocal2 Chronicles 32:4 - findVerse 20midnightJob 24:13-17; Psalm 139:11; Matthew 13:25; John 3:20took1 Kings 3:21
Verse 23Reciprocal1 Kings 3:22 - Nay; Proverbs 15:28 - heartVerse 24Reciprocal1 Kings 3:22 - NayVerse 25DivideThis was apparently a very strange decision; but Solomon saw that the only way to discover the real mother was by the affection and tenderness should would necessarily shew to her offspring. The plan was tried, and succeeded; and it was a proof of his sound judgment, penetration, and acquaintance with the human heart, or rather, of his extraordinary and supernatural wisdom. See note on 1 Kings 3:28. The two following instances are in some faint manner to be compared to Solomon's decision, inasmuch as they also work upon the human sympathies. Suetonius, in his Life of the emperor Claudian, tells us, that this emperor discovered a woman to be the real mother of a young man, whom she refused to acknowledge, by commanding her to marry him, the proofs being doubtful on both sides; for, rather than commit incest, she confessed the truth. Diodorus Siculus also informs us, that Ariopharnes, king of Thrace, being appointed to decided between three young men, each of whom professed to be the son of the deceased king of the Cimmerians, and claimed the succession, discovered the real son by ordering each to shoot an arrow into the dead body of the king: two of them did this without hesitation; but the real son of the deceased monarch refused. Psalm 1:5; 9:18; 38:1; 75:5. Proverbs 5:16; 24:12, etc. This is the view taken of the subject by Dr. Kennicott, and it seems the best and most correct mode of interpreting the text. and it was treason for a subject to claim any wife or virgin who had once formed a part of it. Solomon evidently considered the request of Adonijah in this light; and was convinced that he was still aiming to seize the crown, to which he considered this as one step. But it is very doubtful, how far the plea either of policy or state necessity can justify Solomon in thus embruing his hands in his brother's blood, whatever might have been his treasonable intentions or conduct.spokenPsalm 64:8, 140:9; Proverbs 18:6, 18:7; Ecclesiastes 10:12; Luke 19:22ReciprocalNumbers 16:38 - sinners; 2 Samuel 12:10 - the sword; Proverbs 12:13 - wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips; 18:19 - brother; 20:2 - sinneth; Habakkuk 2:10 - sinned Verse 24as the Lord1 Kings 1:29 set me3:6, 3:7, 10:9; 1 Chronicles 29:23; 2 Chronicles 1:8, 1:9 made meExodus 1:21; 1 Samuel 25:28; 2 Samuel 7:11-13, 7:27; 1 Chronicles 17:10, 17:17, 17:23; Psalm 127:1 as he promised1 Chronicles 22:10 put1 Kings 1:52; Ecclesiastes 8:11-13Reciprocal2 Samuel 23:5 - Although; 1 Kings 2:45 - the throne; 18:10 - the Lord; 1 Chronicles 3:2 - Adonijah; 29:24 - all the sons; Proverbs 17:11 - General; Habakkuk 3:1 - for what Verse 25he fell1 Kings 2:31, 2:34, 2:46; Judges 8:20, 8:21; 1 Samuel 15:33; 2 Samuel 1:15, 4:12ReciprocalJudges 15:12 - fall; 2 Samuel 19:11 - sent; 23:5 - Although; 1 Kings 2:29 - Go; 1 Chronicles 3:2 - Adonijah; 29:24 - all the sons; Proverbs 17:11 - General; Ecclesiastes 8:4 - the word; Habakkuk 3:1 - for what Verse 26Abiathar1 Kings 2:35, 1:7, 1:25 AnathothJoshua 21:18; Isaiah 10:30; Jeremiah 1:1 worthy of deathHeb. a man of death, 1 Samuel 26:16; 2 Samuel 12:5 *marg.barest1 Samuel 22:20-23, 23:6-9; 2 Samuel 15:24, 15:29; 1 Chronicles 15:11, 15:12 hast been2 Samuel 15:24-29; Matthew 10:42; Luke 22:28; Galatians 3:4Reciprocal1 Samuel 2:31 - I will cut; 2:33 - to consume; 22:23 - he that seeketh; 30:7 - Abiathar; 2 Samuel 19:11 - sent; 1 Kings 4:4 - Zadok; 1 Chronicles 6:60 - Anathoth; Jeremiah 32:8 - Anathoth; Mark 2:26 - Abiathar; Romans 6:21 - for the Verse 27So SolomonThis was for having taken part with Adonijah; but by it a remarkable prophecy was fulfilled. Solomon's throne by the death of this man was established in peace, and became a type of the Redeemer's kingdom of peace and righteousness. - Scott. 1 Kings 1:53; 2 Samuel 14:24, 14:28ReciprocalJoshua 2:19 - whosoever; 2 Samuel 19:16 - Shimei; 1 Kings 2:42 - Did I not Verse 37over the1 Kings 15:13; 2 Samuel 15:23; 2 Kings 23:6; 2 Chronicles 29:16; Jeremiah 31:40; John 18:1, Cedronthy blood1 Kings 2:31, 2:33; Leviticus 20:9; Joshua 2:19; 2 Samuel 1:16; Ezekiel 18:13ReciprocalGenesis 2:17 - surely; 2 Samuel 19:23 - Thou shalt; Ezekiel 33:4 - his blood Verse 38The saying1 Kings 20:4; 2 Kings 20:19

See note on 2:1, and see note on Judges 11:1. Had these women been harlots, it is not likely that they would have dared to appear before Solomon; nor is it likely that such persons would have been permitted in the reign of David. Their husbands might at this time have been following their necessary occupations in distant parts.stoodExodus 18:13, 18:16; Numbers 27:2ReciprocalExodus 18:26 - the hard causes; Deuteronomy 17:8 - arise; 2 Samuel 15:2 - came; 2 Chronicles 32:4 - find; Job 9:33 - that might; 29:16 - the cause Verse 17O my lordGenesis 43:20; Romans 13:7Reciprocal2 Chronicles 32:4 - find Verse 20midnightJob 24:13-17; Psalm 139:11; Matthew 13:25; John 3:20 took1 Kings 3:21

Verse 23Reciprocal1 Kings 3:22 - Nay; Proverbs 15:28 - heart Verse 24Reciprocal1 Kings 3:22 - Nay Verse 25DivideThis was apparently a very strange decision; but Solomon saw that the only way to discover the real mother was by the affection and tenderness should would necessarily shew to her offspring.
