16:1 The rebellion of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram; 16:23 Moses separates the people from the rebels' tents; 16:31 The earth swallows up Korah, and a fire consumes others; 16:36 The censers are reserved to holy use; 16:41 Fourteen thousand and seven hundred are slain by a plague, for murmuring against Moses and Aaron; 16:46 Aaron by incense stays the plague.
Verse 1KorahNumbers 26:9, 26:10, 27:3; Exodus 6:18, 6:21; Jude 1:11sons of ReubenGenesis 49:3, 49:4; 1 Chronicles 5:1, 5:2took menAs the word men is not in the text, some read "took counsel;" and some "took courage." Houbigant renders yikkach, rebellionem fecerunt, "they rebelled;" which scarcely any rule of criticism can ever justify. Dr. Geddes' translation is, "Another insurrection was raised against Moses by Korah," etc. Others think that it may mean, "behaved with insolence." But, as Dr. A. Clarke observes, the verb wyyikkach, "and he took" which though at the end of the sentence in English, is the first word in Hebrew, is not in the plural, but the singular; and hence cannot be applied to the acts of all these chiefs. In every part of the Scripture, where this rebellion is referred to, it is attributed to Korah, therefore the verb here belongs to him; and the whole verse should be translated, "Now Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, he took even Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben, and they rose up," etc.; reading, with some manuscripts, the Samaritan, and Septuagint, ben, son, instead of beney, sons.ReciprocalExodus 6:24 - Korah; Numbers 16:19 - Korah; 16:41 - all the; 26:58 - General; Deuteronomy 9:7 - from the day; 11:6 - he did unto; 1 Chronicles 2:33 - Peleth; 6:37 - Korah; 2 Chronicles 26:16 - to burn; Psalm 42:1 - the sons; 78:32 - they sinned; 106:16 - envied; Proverbs 24:21 - meddle; Isaiah 63:10 - they rebelled; Ezekiel 20:36 - General; Acts 7:36 - and in the wildernessVerse 2famousNumbers 26:9; Genesis 6:4; 1 Chronicles 5:24, 12:30; Ezekiel 16:14, 23:10ReciprocalLeviticus 4:22 - a ruler hath sinned; Numbers 1:16 - the renowned; 16:19 - Korah; 16:35 - two hundred; 26:10 - earth opened; 1 Samuel 8:8 - General; Psalm 124:2 - when menVerse 3gatheredNumbers 16:11, 12:1, 12:2, 14:1-4; Psalm 106:16; Acts 7:39, 7:51Ye take too much upon youHeb. The common present that is now made to the great, in these countries, is a horse; but there is reason to believe, that an ass might formerly have answered the same purpose. "If it is a visit of ceremony from a bashaw," says Dr. Russell, "or other person in power, a fine horse, sometimes with furniture, or some such valuable present, is made to him at his departure." As asses were esteemed no dishonourable beasts for the saddle, Sir. J. Chardin, in his manuscript, supposes, that when Samuel disclaimed having taken the ass of any one - 1 Samuel 12:3 he is to be understood of not having taken any ass for his riding. In the same light, he considers this similar declaration of Moses. His reason is "asses being then esteemed very honourable creatures for riding on - Numbers 22:21, 22:30; Judges 5:10; 2 Samuel 16:2 as they are at this very time in Persia, being rode with saddles." 1 Samuel 12:3, 12:4; Acts 20:33, 20:34; 1 Corinthians 9:15; 2 Corinthians 1:12, 7:2, 12:14-17; 1 Thessalonians 2:10ReciprocalGenesis 31:36 - was wroth; Exodus 16:20 - and Moses; Numbers 3:51 - Moses; 1 Samuel 8:6 - prayed; 2 Samuel 22:22 - I have kept; 2 Kings 13:19 - was wroth; Nehemiah 5:6 - General; 5:16 - neither bought; Psalm 99:7 - kept; Isaiah 1:26 - And I will; 33:15 - shaketh; Micah 3:11 - heads; Romans 11:2 - how he maketh; 1 Corinthians 13:5 - is not; 2 Corinthians 12:18 - in the same steps; 1 Thessalonians 2:3 - GeneralVerse 16Be thouNumbers 16:6, 16:7before1 Samuel 12:3, 12:7; 2 Timothy 2:14ReciprocalExodus 16:9 - Come near; Leviticus 10:1 - censer; Numbers 12:4 - Come out; 1 Chronicles 6:49 - Aaron; 23:13 - to burn incenseVerse 171 Samuel 12:7ReciprocalLeviticus 10:1 - censer; Numbers 16:32 - all the; 16:35 - two hundred; Ezekiel 8:11 - everyVerse 18ReciprocalLeviticus 10:1 - strange; 16:12 - from off; 16:13 - And he; Numbers 16:37 - the censers; 16:48 - General; 2 Chronicles 26:16 - to burnVerse 19KorahNumbers 16:1, 16:2and the glory16:42, 12:5, 14:10; Exodus 16:7, 16:10; Leviticus 9:6, 9:23ReciprocalExodus 17:4 - almost; Leviticus 9:4 - to day; Numbers 20:2 - gathered; 20:6 - the glory; 27:3 - in the company; Proverbs 19:3 - foolishness; Isaiah 60:2 - the Lord; Ezekiel 3:23 - the glory; 10:4 - the gloryVerse 20ReciprocalEzekiel 20:13 - I saidVerse 21SeparateGenesis 19:15-22; Jeremiah 5:16; Acts 2:40; 2 Corinthians 6:17; Ephesians 5:6, 5:7; Revelation 18:4that I mayNumbers 16:45, 14:12, 14:15; Exodus 32:10, 33:5; Psalm 73:19; Isaiah 37:36; Habakkuk 3:1, 3:1ReciprocalGenesis 19:14 - Up; Exodus 33:3 - lest I; Leviticus 6:10 - consumed; Numbers 16:24 - General; 16:26 - I pray you; Ezra 9:14 - wouldest not thou; Job 42:10 - when; Psalm 99:6 - they called; Jeremiah 4:20 - in; Ezekiel 9:8 - that I; 13:5 - have not; 20:13 - I said; 1 Corinthians 15:52 - a momentVerse 22they fellNumbers 16:4, 16:45, 14:5the God27:16; Job 12:10; Ecclesiastes 12:7; Isaiah 57:16; Zechariah 12:1; Habakkuk 3:1one man sinGenesis 18:23-25, 18:32; Joshua 7:1-26; 2 Samuel 24:1, 24:17; Romans 5:18; 1 Corinthians 13:7ReciprocalGenesis 2:7 - a living; 17:3 - General; 17:17 - fell; Exodus 32:10 - let me alone; 32:11 - why doth; Leviticus 9:24 - they shouted; 10:6 - lest wrath; Numbers 20:6 - they fell; Joshua 5:14 - fell on his; 7:6 - fell; 22:18 - he will be; 1 Samuel 8:6 - prayed; 1 Chronicles 21:16 - fell upon; 2 Chronicles 7:3 - they bowed; Job 42:10 - when; Psalm 99:6 - they called; Jeremiah 32:27 - God; 38:16 - that made; Ezekiel 9:8 - that I; 13:5 - have not; 18:4 - all souls; Matthew 26:39 - and fell; Luke 11:40 - did; 24:39 - for; Acts 17:25 - seeing; Ephesians 4:6 - GodVerse 23Reciprocal1 Kings 13:5 - GeneralVerse 24Numbers 16:21 It should seem that Dathan and Abiram had set up a spacious tabernacle in the midst of the tents of their families, where they kept court, met in council, and hung out their flag of defiance against Moses; it is here called the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. There, as in the place of rendezvous, Dathan and Abiram stayed, when Korah and his friends went up to the tabernacle of the Lord, waiting the issue of their trial; but here we are told how they had their business done, before that trial was over. Houbigant renders yikkach, rebellionem fecerunt, "they rebelled;" which scarcely any rule of criticism can ever justify. In every part of the Scripture, where this rebellion is referred to, it is attributed to Korah, therefore the verb here belongs to him; and the whole verse should be translated, "Now Korah, son of Izhar, son of Kohath, son of Levi, he took even Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, son of Peleth, son of Reuben, and they rose up," etc.; reading, with some manuscripts, the Samaritan, and Septuagint, ben, son, instead of beney, sons.ReciprocalExodus 6:24 - Korah; Numbers 16:19 - Korah; 16:41 - all the; 26:58 - General; Deuteronomy 9:7 - from the day; 11:6 - he did unto; 1 Chronicles 2:33 - Peleth; 6:37 - Korah; 2 Chronicles 26:16 - to burn; Psalm 42:1 - the sons; 78:32 - they sinned; 106:16 - envied; Proverbs 24:21 - meddle; Isaiah 63:10 - they rebelled; Ezekiel 20:36 - General; Acts 7:36 - and in the wilderness Verse 2famousNumbers 26:9; Genesis 6:4; 1 Chronicles 5:24, 12:30; Ezekiel 16:14, 23:10ReciprocalLeviticus 4:22 - a ruler hath sinned; Numbers 1:16 - the renowned; 16:19 - Korah; 16:35 - two hundred; 26:10 - earth opened; 1 Samuel 8:8 - General; Psalm 124:2 - when men Verse 3gatheredNumbers 16:11, 12:1, 12:2, 14:1-4; Psalm 106:16; Acts 7:39, 7:51 Ye take too much upon youHeb. J. Chardin, in his manuscript, supposes, that when Samuel disclaimed having taken the ass of any one - 1 Samuel 12:3
he is to be understood of not having taken any ass for his riding. In the same light, he considers this similar declaration of Moses. His reason is "asses being then esteemed very honourable creatures for riding on - Numbers 22:21, 22:30; Judges 5:10; 2 Samuel 16:2

It should seem that Dathan and Abiram had set up a spacious tabernacle in the midst of the tents of their families, where they kept court, met in council, and hung out their flag of defiance against Moses; it is here called the tabernacle of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. There, as in the place of rendezvous, Dathan and Abiram stayed, when Korah and his friends went up to the tabernacle of the Lord, waiting the issue of their trial; but here we are told how they had their business done, before that trial was over. God will take what method he pleases in his judgments.ReciprocalGenesis 19:15 - hastened; Numbers 16:45 - Get you up Verse 25Numbers 11:16, 11:17, 11:25, 11:30
Verse 26I pray youThe rebels, with all that belonged to them, were, as an accursed thing, devoted to utter destruction - Leviticus 27:28, 27:29. Joshua 7:13-15, 7:23-26. The people therefore were forbidden to touch anything belonging to them; that they might enter a solemn protest against their wickedness, acknowledge the justice of their punishment, and express their fear of being involved in it.
