It is probable, therefore, that Hodesh was another name for Baara; and this is asserted by the Targumist: "And he begat of Baara, that is, of Chodesh, his wife, so called because he espoused her anew.

Verse 11Reciprocal1 Chronicles 8:9 - HodeshVerse 12OnoOno is stated by Reland to have been three miles from Lydda. Ezra 2:33; Nehemiah 6:2, 7:37, 11:35LodLod, or Lydda, was situated about four leagues from Joppa, and a day's journey, or about thirty-two miles nw from Jerusalem; and, according to the Antonine Itinerary, twelve miles from Jamnia, eighteen from Eleutheropolis, and twenty two from Bethar. Josephus says it was a village, not yielding to a city in greatness; and that it was one of three toparchies dismembered from Samaria, and given to the Jews. It was destroyed by Cesitus in the Jewish war, and, when rebuilt, was called Diospolis. It is now called Loudd, and is a poor village, situated in a fine plain about a league to the e-ne of Ramia.
Verse 28dweltJoshua 15:63, 18:28; Judges 1:21; Nehemiah 11:1, 11:7-9JerusalemJerusalem, the ancient capital of Judea, is situated in long. 35 degrees 20 minutes e, lat. 31 degrees 47 minutes 47 seconds n; and, according to the best authorities, 136 miles sw of Damascus, 34 miles s of Shechem or Nablous, 45 miles e of Jaffa, 27 miles n of Hebron, and about 20 miles w of Jericho. The city of Jerusalem was built on hills, and encompassed with mountains - Psalm 125:2 in a stony and barren soil, and was about sixteen furlongs in length, say Strabo. The ancient city of Jebus, taken by David from the Jebusites, was not large, and stood on a mountain south of that on which the temple was erected. Here David built a new city, called the city of David, wherein was the royal palace. Between these two mountains lay the valley of Millo, filled up by David and Solomon; and after the reign of Manasseh, another city is mentioned, called the second. The Maccabees considerably enlarged Jerusalem on the north, enclosing a third hill; and Josephus mentions a fourth hill, called Bezetha, which Agrippa joined to the former: this new city lay north of the temple, along the brook Kidron. See note on 1 Chronicles 9:34.

The list is here nearly the same with those found in Ezra and Nehemiah, and contains those who returned to Jerusalem with Zerubbabel, but the list in Nehemiah is more ample, probably because it contains those who came afterwards; the object of the sacred writer here being to give the names of those who came first - 1 Chronicles 9:2. These consisted of men belonging not only to the tribes of Judah and Benjamin, but to many of the other tribes of Israel, who took advantage of the proclamation of Cyrus to return to Jerusalem. After having been successively destroyed by the Babylonians and Romans, and taken by the Saracens, Crusaders, and Turks, in the possession of the latter of whom it still continues, not a vestige remains of the capital of David and Solomon, not a monument of Jewish times is standing. The very course of the walls is changed, and the boundaries of the ancient city are become doubtful. The monks pretend to shew the sites of the sacred places; but they have not the slightest pretensions to even a probable identity with the real places. The Jerusalem that now is, however, called by the Arabs El Kouds, or "the holy city," is still a respectable, good-looking town, of an irregular shape: it is surrounded by high embattled walls, enclosing an area not exceeding two miles and a half, and occupying two small hills, having the valley of Jehoshaphat on the east, the valley of Siloam and Gehinnom on the south, and the valley of Rephaim on the west; and containing a population variously estimated at from 20,000 to 30,000 souls.Reciprocal15:12 - Ye are the chief; Ezra 8:1 - the chief; Nehemiah 12:12 - the chiefVerse 35 amin Gibeon1 Chronicles 8:29-40the father2:23, 2:24, 2:45, 2:50-52whoseSome editions read achatho, "his sister;" but in the parallel place 8:29, it is ishto, "his wife," which is also the reading of the LXX, Vulgate, Arabic, and Syriac here, and is undoubtedly the true reading. Verse 11Reciprocal1 Chronicles 8:9 - Hodesh Verse 12OnoOno is stated by Reland to have been three miles from Lydda. Ezra 2:33; Nehemiah 6:2, 7:37, 11:35 LodLod, or Lydda, was situated about four leagues from Joppa, and a day's journey, or about thirty-two miles nw from Jerusalem; and, according to the Antonine Itinerary, twelve miles from Jamnia, eighteen from Eleutheropolis, and twenty two from Bethar.

Verse 28dweltJoshua 15:63, 18:28; Judges 1:21; Nehemiah 11:1, 11:7-9 JerusalemJerusalem, the ancient capital of Judea, is situated in long. The city of Jerusalem was built on hills, and encompassed with mountains - Psalm 125:2
in a stony and barren soil, and was about sixteen furlongs in length, say Strabo.

Properly speaking, the divisions mentioned here constituted the whole of the Israelitish people, who were divided into priests, Levites, common Israelites, and Nethinims.the king's1 Kings 10:5; 2 Kings 11:19; Ezekiel 44:2, 44:3, 46:1, 46:2; Acts 3:11 they1 Chronicles 26:12-19Reciprocal2 Chronicles 9:4 - ascent; Nehemiah 11:3 - Now; Jeremiah 35:4 - the keeper; Ezekiel 40:6 - unto Verse 19Ebiasaph1 Chronicles 6:22, 6:23 KorahNumbers 26:9-11; Psalm 42:1, 44:1, 49:1 *titlesgatesHeb. thresholds, 84:10 *marg.over the host2 Kings 11:9, 11:15; 2 Chronicles 23:4-10 keepers of the entry1 Chronicles 26:7, 26:8, 26:13-19ReciprocalNumbers 18:5 - And ye; 2 Kings 22:4 - the keepers; 1 Chronicles 9:17 - Shallum; 9:31 - Shallum; Nehemiah 11:15 - Shemaiah; Jeremiah 35:4 - the keeper; 52:24 - door Verse 20PhinehasNumbers 3:32, 4:16, 4:28, 4:33, 31:6 the Lord25:11-13; 1 Samuel 16:18; Acts 7:9, 7:10Reciprocal1 Chronicles 6:4 - Phinehas; 6:50 - Phinehas; 11:9 - for; 12:27 - the leader; 2 Chronicles 35:8 - rulers Verse 21Zechariah1 Chronicles 26:14Reciprocal15:23 - General Verse 22in their1 Chronicles 9:16, 9:25; Nehemiah 11:25-30, 11:36, 12:28, 12:29, 12:44 David1 Chronicles 23:1-32, 25:1-26:32, 28:13, 28:21 Samuel1 Samuel 9:9 did ordainHeb. foundedset officeor, trust, 1 Chronicles 9:26, 9:31Reciprocal2 Chronicles 31:15 - set office; 31:18 - set office Verse 23the oversight1 Chronicles 23:32; 2 Chronicles 23:19; Nehemiah 12:45; Ezekiel 44:10, 44:11, 44:14ReciprocalNumbers 18:5 - And ye; Psalm 134:1 - which by night; Ezekiel 40:45 - the keepers Verse 24four1 Chronicles 26:14-18Reciprocal1 Kings 10:15 - all the kings; 1 Chronicles 26:17 - Eastward; 2 Chronicles 23:19 - porters; Ezekiel 40:6 - unto Verse 25seven2 Kings 11:5, 11:7; 2 Chronicles 23:8Reciprocal1 Chronicles 9:22 - in their; 24:19 - the orderings; Luke 1:23 - the days Verse 26set officeor, trustchambersor, storehouses, treasuries. 1 Chronicles 26:20-27; 2 Chronicles 31:5-12; Nehemiah 10:38, 10:39, 13:5Reciprocal1 Kings 6:5 - built; 1 Chronicles 9:22 - set office; 9:31 - set office; 28:11 - the treasuries; Nehemiah 12:44 - chambers; Jeremiah 35:2 - into one; Ezekiel 40:7 - General; 40:17 - there were; 45:5 - for a possession; John 8:20 - in the treasury Verse 27the charge1 Chronicles 23:32; Romans 12:7 the opening1 Samuel 3:15; Malachi 1:10ReciprocalNumbers 31:30 - keep the; Jeremiah 35:4 - the keeper Verse 28the charge1 Chronicles 26:22-26; Numbers 23:25-27; Ezra 8:25-30; Nehemiah 12:44, 13:4, 13:5 bring them in and outHeb. bring them in by tale, and carry them outReciprocal1 Chronicles 23:4 - twenty; 23:28 - purifying Verse 29instrumentsor, vesselsthe oilExodus 27:20 the frankincense30:23-38Reciprocal30:34 - frankincense; Numbers 4:12 - General; 4:32 - the instruments; 1 Chronicles 23:28 - purifying; 23:29 - the fine flour; 28:13 - the vessels; 2 Chronicles 8:15 - the treasures; Ezra 6:9 - wheat Verse 30of the sonsExodus 30:25, 30:33, 30:35-38, 37:29Reciprocal30:34 - frankincense Verse 31Shallum1 Chronicles 9:17, 9:19 set officeor, trust, 9:22, 9:26 in the pansor, on flat plates, or slices, Leviticus 2:5, 2:7, 6:21Reciprocal1 Chronicles 23:29 - for the showbread Verse 32the sons1 Chronicles 6:33-48 showbreadHeb. bread of orderingtoExodus 25:30; Leviticus 24:5-8Reciprocal24:8 - General; 1 Chronicles 23:29 - for the showbread Verse 33the singers1 Chronicles 6:31-33, 15:16-22, 16:4-6, 25:1-31; Ezra 7:24 were freeNehemiah 11:17, 11:22, 11:23 theyetc. Heb. upon thememployedA number of Levites were employed by rotation in singing the praises of Jehovah; and they seem to have continued the service day and night. but the Jerusalem of sacred history is no more. The Jerusalem that now is, however, called by the Arabs El Kouds, or "the holy city," is still a respectable, good-looking town, of an irregular shape: it is surrounded by high embattled walls, enclosing an area not exceeding two miles and a half, and occupying two small hills, having the valley of Jehoshaphat on the east, the valley of Siloam and Gehinnom on the south, and the valley of Rephaim on the west; and containing a population variously estimated at from 20,000 to 30,000 souls.Reciprocal15:12 - Ye are the chief; Ezra 8:1 - the chief; Nehemiah 12:12 - the chief Verse 35 amin Gibeon1 Chronicles 8:29-40 the father2:23, 2:24, 2:45, 2:50-52 whoseSome editions read achatho, "his sister;" but in the parallel place 8:29, it is ishto, "his wife," which is also the reading of the LXX, Vulgate, Arabic, and Syriac here, and is undoubtedly the true reading. This repetition of part of Bemjamin's genealogy seems to have been intended merely as an introduction to the ensuing history.
